Description
Kashi is a holy place and the Ganga river is regarded as one of the Holiest rivers. Asthi’s offered in the holy waters will help the departed soul to attain freedom from the cycle of rebirth, thereby achieving peace. Asthi Visarjan at Varanasi is really a very important religious process. The meaning of Asthi is the leftover bone or some collected ashes of dead people. After performing the last rites, the remains of the dead person are collected and tied mostly in a single piece of cloth. In the end, the ashes should be immersed in the flowing river. This overall process of immersion is called “Asthi Visarjan”.
Asthi Visarjan should always be performed in a prescribed manner as specified in our Vedic Scriptures, if not performed as per Vedic traditions, the soul might feel lost which is not good for the upcoming generations.
The Asthis are collected either on the day of Cremation or on the 3rd, 7th, or 9th day and are immersed in flowing water before the 10th day. It is better to collect Asthi on the 3rd day following cremation rites. If Asthi needs to be immersed after the 10th day then it should be done only after performing the Tirtha-shraddha ritual.
