Avani Avittam/Upakramam is termed as “the beginning or commencement” marks the refreshing of study of vedas and is a significant ritual for a Brahmin to change his “Poonal/white thread” once every year to purify his white thread from any kind of “Doshas” or “Theetu” 

The word Avani implies the Tamil month, and Avittam is one among the 27 Nakshatras.

All must perform this ritual without fail and do prayshchita to remove all the sins and secure the divine blessings.

Description

Avani Avittam /Upakarma means “Beginning or Arambham” to begin the study of the Veda (Vedha Adhyayanam). It is an ancient and the most important ritual performed by the Brahmin community. Avani is the Name of Tamil Month; Avittam is one of the 27 nakshatras or Stars.

The day is of great significance to Yajur Vedi, Rig Vedi & Sama Vedi Brahmins. On the next day, Gayatri Japam should perform. This entire Ritual is called Aavani Avittam.

This auspicious day represents the day when Lord Narayana took avatar as Lord Hayagriva. Lord Hayagriva restored the Vedas to Brahma from Asuras and also is the God of Knowledge.

Below are the dates for 2024 Upakarma as per the vedams.

  • 19th August 2024 Rigvedam Upakarma – Timing – 8:00 AM.
  • 19th August 2024 Yajurvedam Upakarma – 1st Batch 6:30 AM, 2nd Batch 9:30 AM.
  • 5th September 2024 Samavedam Upakarma –  Timing – 8:00 AM.

When to Perform Avani Avittam ‘Upakarma’?

This Ceremony should perform in the month of Aavani, on the full moon day.
