The ‘Tharpanam’ offered during Amavasya is called ‘Amavasya Tharpanam’. Tharpanam word is derived from Sanskrit word ‘Thrip’ which means to please. It consists of two parts- (i) Pitru Tharpanam (ii) Karunya Tharpanam. Pitru means Ancestors. So the offering done in order to satisfy our ancestors including parents, grandparents or forefathers etc is called Pitru Tharpanam.
